After an early career existential crisis, I realized that I didn’t want to work in my chosen field forever. Shortly after that, I discovered the first FIRE blogs (Financial Independence Retire Early) and made a plan to pursue early retirement. I wanted to leave my job so I could enjoy doing what I really wanted, namely creating art and writing.

Once I achieved early retirement, however, I realized something still didn’t feel right. 

Somewhere along the way, I had accepted a path that was predictable for things like a career or financial stability…but not for meaning. This left a gaping blank space in my life. I did everything “right”, I achieved, I reached my “FI number” but I was unable to feel purpose or meaning. I was unhappy as a result. 

I don’t have close to all of the answers, but I feel compelled to talk about my experiences in this blog. For me, FIRE started out as a money and career thing and ended up as a quest for meaning.

In my journey, I’ve come across a lot of people who feel like I feel. It’s time to start having these conversations, not just in the FIRE community but in the greater culture.
